DPH ANNOUNCES UPDATED PLANS FOR ADMINISTERING SECOND DOSES OF COVID-19 VACCINE

Date Posted: Friday, January 29th, 2021

Thursday, January 28, 2021, the Division of Public Health (DPH) announced an updated approach to administering second doses in response to new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The CDC announced Friday that an interval of 42 days between doses is acceptable, if adhering to the 21-day (Pfizer) and 28-day (Moderna) intervals is not possible. Given extremely limited vaccine supply, DPH is recommending to vaccine partners that they schedule second doses between 28 and 35 days after the first dose is administered. This policy will enable the state to continue administering first doses to the vulnerable 65+ population at highest risk of hospitalization and death. The science shows that the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine provides 52% to 80% protection. For context, the average flu vaccine, which is responsible for saving countless lives and hospitalizations, provides 40% to 60% protection. Delawareans who have received their first dose of COVID-19 […]

Delaware’s 2021 COVID Vaccination Schedule & Info.

Date Posted: Monday, January 11th, 2021

As of January 8, 2021, the state of Delaware is nearly one month into its vaccination program and is still completing Phase 1a (see attached timeline) To date, the state has received 53,650 doses of vaccine, including both the Pfizer and Moderna formulations. Of these, 21,814 doses have been administered.  There are several reasons for the gap between doses received and doses administered. According to Division of Public Health (DPH) Director, Dr. Karyl Rattay, more than 11,000 doses are being held by hospitals and DPH to administer needed second vaccinations. (Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two shots, given three to four weeks apart, to achieve full effectiveness). Another 10,000 doses are being held by DPH for upcoming mass inoculation events the agency has planned. There is also a lag between when a dose is given and when it is reported.  The Division of Public Health continues to plan […]
