Delaware Safe Boating Class

August 10 | 7:30 am 4:00 pm

Event Description

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCG AUX), Flotilla 12-09, is partnering with DNREC to provide an eight-hour basic boating-safety class.

The class is set for Saturday, Aug. 10, beginning at 7:30 a.m., with registration and payment of the course fee; and the course from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by the test. The class will be held at Evans Park Community Center, 32517 Dukes Drive, Millville. The course fee is $20 per person.

To preregister, email Roy Zimmerman at rzimmyuscgaux@gmail.com.

The Basic Boating Safety Course covers a range of topics, including the rules of the waterways, distinguishing navigational aids and water depths, and speed limits for appropriate waterways. It covers understanding weather systems to have a safe boating experience and basic skills, including engine mechanics.

Those born on or after Jan. 1, 1978, must successfully complete a boating safety course before operating a motorized boat, including personal watercraft, on Delaware waters. This Basic Boating Safety Course meets the requirement for Delaware’s mandatory boating education.

The course includes state laws and regulations, as well as required equipment, and what to do if an officer stops the vessel. The Basic Boating Safety Course has a section on the dangers of boating under the influence. Lecture and course materials are designed to inform boaters on how to keep their vessels comfortable and safe in differing types of waves, seas, weather and conditions, and basic concepts associated with the use of a marine VHF radio.

Most importantly, the course emphasizes common sense and general courtesy to all boaters and personal watercraft riders. All course materials will be provided; however, attendees should bring their own notetaking materials, lunch and drinks.

A written test of the information presented during class is required and will be administered at the end of the lecture session (approximately 4 p.m.). Attendees should plan on staying an additional hour following the lecture session to complete the written test. DNREC scores each test and provides results directly to each attendee via regular mail.

Class size is limited. To help enable an understanding of interest in this class, those interested should email the name, email address and phone number of each attendee to Roy Zimmerman at rzimmyuscgaux@gmail.com.
