September 16, 2024
An area of low pressure over the Southeast U.S. coast could become a Tropical Storm today. Although Tropical Storm Warnings are now in effect for portions of South Carolina and North Carolina, there are no plans for Tropical Storm Warnings for our area. However, there will still be impacts from this system. Periods of heavy rain, dangerous rip currents, and minor coastal flooding are expected through the middle of the week.
What Has Changed: For the heavy rain, the timing has shifted, more towards Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. For coastal flooding, Coastal Flood Advisories were issued for Atlantic, Cape May, and Cumberland County in New Jersey, and Kent and Sussex County in Delaware for tonight’s high tide.
For Heavy Rain:
Locations affected: The entire region is in a MARGINAL risk for Excessive Rainfall.
Timing: Tuesday Night through Wednesday.
Impacts: Heavy rain could result in urban and poor drainage flooding. However, widespread flooding is not expected at this time.
Confidence on Occurrence: Low confidence in timing and extent of impacts (20-30%).
For Minor Coastal Flooding:
Locations affected: The southern New Jersey and Delaware coasts, as well as along Delaware Bay.
Timing: During the evening high tide cycles starting Monday night and continuing through the middle of the week.
Impacts: Flooding is possible on the most vulnerable roads in coastal and bayside communities, and along inland tidal waterways. Some partial or full road closures are possible.
Confidence on Occurrence: Moderate confidence in timing and extent of impacts (60-70%).
For the High Risk for Rip Currents:
Locations affected: The Jersey Shore and Delaware Beaches.
Timing: Through at least Tuesday, and possibly into Wednesday.
Impacts: Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
Confidence on Occurrence: High (100%).
